The Secret Life of Jennifer Thompson, owner of Plantation Carriage Company
How did you ever become involved in your business?
I was born for this job. After all, it was in my blood. My father was a local historian and historic site manager at Wormsloe Historic site. He was really more than that, both of my parents were. They lived and breathed the history and the success of the site.
Years would pass and like those trees I grew my roots. Well over a decade ago I became a tour guide. It felt natural. The Savannah carriage tour is so much more than just the history. It’s about sharing my hometown, our history, and my love for horses with everyone I meet. Our hometown company has a staff made up of family and friends whose talents all showcase a love for history, horses, and hospitality.
What would you say is one of the most romantic sights during the duration of the horse-drawn carriage rides?
Riding underneath the live oak trees has the most ambiance. Guests relax in the back of the open carriage, listening to the clip-clop feet of the horse, looking around at all the beauty draped with moss.
What do you do in your off-hours?
I spend time with my daughter. We love to research the history of the town. I’m also teaching her a love for horses, and the way you work with horses is having a kind heart.
During your romantic horse-drawn carriage rides, can you give us an example of one of the most memorable ones?
They are all so special, but they are all a little different. There’s a story behind everyone of them. Each and everyone is very moving.
Recently, for instance, we created a special package for a husband and wife. The husband had been recently diagnosed with ALS, and we created a special memory for them that they could hold onto during the tough times that they would have to face in the future.
We also created a vow renewal package for a couple’s wedding anniversary. The special-occasion experience celebrated their 30 years together; after a simple courthouse wedding, they had finally splurged on themselves.
